Travel Consultations
Are you or your family going someplace exciting? We can help. Aspen Medical Care offers travel consultations for children and adults.
During your visit, we will discuss your specific itinerary and make recommendations based on best practices. Different countries, and different regions within the same country, may have different recommendations regarding medication or immunization. For example, many countries have cities where malaria prophylaxis is unneeded, but rural areas where prophylaxis is highly recommended.
Travel consultations at Aspen Medical Care includes vaccine recommendations. Additional vaccines, such as the hepatitis A vaccine or typhoid vaccine, may be needed for safe travel. Aspen Medical Care has most travel vaccines in stock and can administer vaccines during the travel advice consultation. The yellow fever vaccine and the Japanese encephalitis vaccines are two vaccines Aspen Medical Care does not keep in stock. The Japanese encephalitis vaccine is exceptionally hard to find, and usually requires a trip to Denver to obtain. We routinely refer patients to Community Health Services for the yellow fever vaccine.* Vaccines make the timing of your travel consultation important! All vaccines require at least two weeks to become effective. Some vaccines require two or more doses to become fully effective. For example, the hepatitis A vaccine series requires 2 doses, spaced 6 months apart. We recommend starting a discussion or making an appointment for a travel advice appointment as soon as you know your itinerary.
Discussion of emergency or ‘just in case’ medication is included in your travel consult! Not only will we review when and how to use over-the-counter medications, we will also talk about any emergency prescriptions you might need. Medications for traveler’s diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, and altitude sickness are frequently offered.
Finally, we will review common questions like ‘Can I drink the water at my destination?’ or ‘Do I have to use bottled water to brush my teeth? What about showering?’ Especially for children or first time travelers, following safe drinking water practices can make or break a vacation.
One last note, travel consultations should not be a walk-in visit. Our providers need time to review your itinerary and prepare custom advice for your travels, so please schedule your travel consultation well in advance of your travel so you get the care and consideration you deserve!
